Poetry and Photography Project

My latest project has been to design five a5 poetry postcards featuring my photographs and words. The plan is to sell these at poetry readings, markets, festivals, Magic Fish Dreaming book signings and workshops as I work towards my next books. I’ll read them at open readings when they are on as well. You’ll see these for the first time at the Mt Alford Artisan’s Market if you can make it to that.

You can see the latest Nineteen Months contributions here.

Above is a slide show of my contributions to the site over the last three years. If you visit the site you can read the quotations that were placed with them.

Here are just a few:

“Know ye that the world is like unto a mirage which the thirsty one thinks to be water; its water is a vapor; its mercy a difficulty; its repose hardship and ordeal; leave it to its people and turn unto the Kingdom of your Lord the Merciful.”
-Abdu’l-Baha, Baha’i World Faith

“O banished and faithful friend! Quench the thirst of heedlessness with the sanctified waters of My grace, and chase the gloom of remoteness through the morning-light of My Divine presence.”
-Baha’u’llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah

“The sun is the same sun, no matter from what sign it may manifest itself or from what spot it may arise. Thou must look at the Sun; do not become veiled by the places from which the Sun appears.”
-‘Abdu’l-Baha, Tablets of Abdul-Baha Abbas

This photograph depicts ‘A leaf of the most Exalted Paradise’

“The word of God which the Supreme Pen hath recorded on the fifth leaf of the Most Exalted Paradise is this: Above all else, the greatest gift and the most wondrous blessing hath ever been and will continue to be Wisdom.”

-Baha’u’llah, Tablets of Baha’u’llah

“Say: Nature in its essence is the embodiment of My Name, the Maker, the Creator. Its manifestations are diversified by varying causes, and in this diversity there are signs.”
-Baha’u’llah: Tablets of Baha’u’llah

“When a soul has in it the life of the spirit, then does it bring forth good fruit and become a divine tree.”
-‘Abdu’l-Baha, Paris Talks

Here the hands represent the soul
in action and on that hand
is the imprint of the divine tree.

“The companions of all who adore Thee are the tears they shed, and the comforters of such as seek Thee are the groans they utter, and the food of them who haste to meet Thee is the fragments of their broken hearts.”
-Baha’u’llah, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf

“Blessed thou art and more blessed thou shalt be if thy feet be firm, thy heart tranquil through the fragrance of His Holy Spirit and thy secret and hidden thoughts pure before the Lord of Hosts!”
-‘Abdu’l-Baha, Tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Baha

Inspired by Boonah Trip

“Throughout the universe the divine power is effulgent in endless images and pictures. The world of creation, the world of humanity may be likened to the earth itself and the divine power to the sun.”
-‘Abdu’l-Baha, Compilation, Baha’i World Faith

This month’s Nineteen month’s contribution.

I was so inspired by this trip to Boonah.  Can you believe these images were all taken from a moving car?

No I wasn’t driving!  We had just been to the most wonderful devotional meeting hosted by a dear friend.

People from several nationalities in the small town of Boonah 100 kilometres from Brisbane had gathered for prayer and meditation on the concept of fellowship.

We shared prayers from world religions, music, fellowship, and learnt a little more about each other.

We left to go home and the setting sun was glorious, and we had another meeting to get to.  I so longed to stop but luckily I was able to take a few images from our car.

This moving sun felt like the continual blessing of the devotional meeting we had just been to.

Ah the metaphor of sun – divine power – divine blessing.

When Mum Came to Visit

Me and Mum
Taken by my niece – me and Mum.

When Mum came to visit, I had the opportunity to photograph her educating her granddaughter, bubu, in culture.

She visited, from Tasmania where she now lives, to assist her with an art project.

This ended up inspiring my Nineteen months contribution – Asma.

2015-08-08 Culture and cultural centre 156

“Hearken ye to the Call of this wronged One, and magnify ye the name of the one true God, and adorn yourselves with the ornament of His remembrance.”
-Baha’u’llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha’u’llah

Hearkening to the call; she looks away from the camera. Praising the name of God; she does the best with learning from her grandmother. Adorning herself with symbols of culture; she remembers the unity of humanity in all its diversity.

As well as this I began a series of photographs on the transmission of culture.

A special thanks to my mum and daughter for inspiring my life and photography.

Unknowable and Fathomless Mystery

The beauty and power of the ocean expressed to me the unknowable, and fathomless mystery.

“To every discerning and illumined heart it is evident that God, the unknowable Essence, the divine Being, is immensely exalted beyond every human attribute…Far be it from His glory that human tongue should adequately recount His praise, or that human heart comprehend His fathomless mystery.”
-Baha’u’llah, The Kitab-i-Iqan

“Thou art My glory and My glory fadeth not; thou art My robe and My robe shall never be outworn.

Abide then in thy love for Me, that thou mayest find Me in the realm of glory.”

-Baha’u’llah, The Hidden Words
